4 Things You Should Know About Natural Dish Soap

4 Things You Should Know About Natural Dish Soap

When curating an eco-friendly home, natural dish soap can be a simple swap for your family. Unlike some swaps, there’s no weird texture, scent, or unique way to use it. Instead you’re left with clean dishes, gently cleansed skin, and when you choose refillables, you’ll be left with a lot less waste!

1. Natural Dish Soap Works

Arguably the most important thing to know is that not only does natural dish soap work, but it holds its own compared to conventional dish soaps. We use plant-powered surfactants that are tough on grease, but gentle on your skin and easy on the planet. It’s a win-win.

We use a variety of plant-powered surfactants in our dish soap formula. A surfactant breaks the surface tension in liquids, allowing your dishes to become clean. We use the following:

  • Sodium C14-C16 Olefin Sulfonate might sound intense, but it’s derived from coconut and is known for creating a rich, foamy lather.
  • Lauramine Oxide is also derived from coconut. It’s great for creating a foamy lather, stabilizing the formula, and it can even act as an emollient and conditioner to soften and protect your skin.

We also use a plant-powered detergent, which is a non-soap cleaning agent. It helps to clean your dishes, but it’s not classified as soap. We use decyl glucoside which comes from corn and coconuts. It’s mild, gentle, and it won’t dry your skin like harsh detergents can.

2. Natural Dish Soap Skips the Fragrances, but Keeps the Scent

We use 100% organic essential oils in our natural Dish Soap so you can enjoy a fresh, clean scent without the skin irritation or headaches of perfumes. Our bestseller is Bergamot + Lime, a revitalizing scent that leaves your sink smelling herbaceous and crisp.

3. Natural Dish Soap won’t Dry Your Hands

Our plant-powered surfactants and detergents were chosen because they’re tough on grease, but gentle on your skin. You’ll find that after a sinkful of dishes, your hands won’t feel tight or dry, but gently cleansed.

4. Natural Dish Soap Is Easier on the Environment than Conventional Options

Unlike conventional soaps, our natural dish soap is easier on the environment because it’s packaged in a glass bottle, our formula avoids harmful chemicals that can contaminate our water and soil, it’s biodegradable, and it’s dye-free.

These benefits are amplified when using our Refill Kits. Each 3-litre refill box of natural dish soap replaces six 500mL plastic bottles! Which means every time you use a full 3-litre refill box you’re saving six plastic bottles from the landfill.

Since our launch in 2018, our community has saved over 100,000 plastic bottles from the landfill, and this number goes up every day.

How to Use the Bare Home Solid Dish Soap Bar

How to Use the Bare Home Solid Dish Soap Bar

You’re a big fan of our refills, right? So why should you use a solid dish soap bar?

We made these eco-friendly bars to give you more sustainable options for your home. Whether you prefer solid bars, like the minimal look on your countertop, or want to change things up, they can clean a sinkful of dishes like nobody’s business, or they can work with and complement liquid dish soap.

Why You’ll Love a Solid Dish Soap Bar

While a solid bar of dish soap uses less energy to manufacture and ship, one of the biggest benefits is that it’s completely plastic free, with very minimal packaging overall. Each bar is wrapped in a small piece of recyclable paper. That’s it!

You’ll also love a solid dish soap bar if you prefer a very minimal countertop without any bottles or packaging. Just don’t forget your Natural Pot Brush and Self-Draining Silicone Soap Tray. The brush is sculpted to fit in the palm of your hand for easy scrubbing, and the soap tray will ensure the bar drains properly, giving it a longer life. You can find our Solid Dish Soap and Natural Pot Brush in a bundle, or you can use a Swedish Sponge Cloth instead.

Why Ours is Different

Powered by plants, our Solid Dish Soap is tough enough to cut through stubborn grease and baked-on food, but gentle on your skin. Each bar is handmade in Canada with olive and coconut oils and scented with energizing grapefruit and orange essential oils. Nothing else! The formula is vegan and biodegradable, so it’s good for you, good for your home, and good for the planet.

Each block will last the average household about four to six months, so it’s cost effective too.

How to Use a Solid Dish Soap Bar

Use a solid dish soap bar just like you’d use a normal bar of soap.

Using warm water, wet a Swedish sponge cloth or pot scrubber and rub on the soap in a circular motion to create rich suds. Repeat as needed to refresh suds for ultimate grease-cutting power. Wash your dish and rinse well before drying.

For really tough, baked on messes, use a scrubber to lather the cleansing suds all over the dish before soaking in hot water. Let the item soak for a couple of hours before using our pot brush to give it a good scrub.

How to Create an At-Home Refill Station

How to Create an At-Home Refill Station

We’re always talking about refills, so today we’re sharing our best tips for creating an at-home refill station. Having a space to set up your refilling necessities will make it easier to use them, and we’re always here for some home decor inspiration!

Why Do We Recommend Refills?

Refillable cleaning products can be refilled when empty, rather than tossed into the trash. Our community loves them because refills help them reduce waste (especially single-use plastic) and it’s convenient. Rather than running to the store when you’re out, you can refill your cleaning supplies at home.

To give you a sense of how eco-friendly refills are: since our launch in 2018, our community has saved over 100,000 plastic bottles from the landfill, an incredible feat we’re incredibly proud of!

Where to Create an At-Home Refill Station

Choose a space to set up your at-home refill station wherever is most convenient. Our favourite spots are the kitchen cupboard (especially for dish soap), a linen closet or cleaning cupboard, the laundry room, or your bathroom shelf.

One pro-tip is to store your refill boxes up high so you can fit the glass bottle underneath to refill it, rather than lifting the refill box onto a counter every time.

What You’ll Need for an At-Home Refill Station

Once you’ve decided where to create your refill station, you’ll need your refill supplies. For starters, you’ll need our refill kits and any other cleaning essentials you’ll want to have on hand. You might want to include sponge cloths, extra bar soap, or stain remover and dryer balls

Next you might want to gather small baskets for organization, like these or these, or larger baskets like these

Finally you’ll want to choose any decor to spruce up your refill station. Leaving your boxes out on display makes them even easier to use, and decor will add personal touches to make the station your own. We’re all about a gorgeous potted plant, some books (especially in the kitchen - turn your cookbooks into decor!), or any design objects like this gold piece or these pastel pots

Once you have your items, it’s all about arranging them in a way that fits your space and is functional enough so you can easily refill your glass bottles. Take inspiration from photos below, or join us on Instagram where we’re always sharing how our community uses and styles their Bare Home products!
